The Scottish Rite is one of the appendant bodies of Freemasonry, created to expand upon the teachings and symbolism introduced in the first three degrees of Craft Masonry. Its roots trace back to France in the mid-1700s, where additional Masonic degrees began to develop beyond those traditionally conferred in Blue Lodges. These higher degrees eventually spread throughout Europe and the Americas, evolving into what became known as the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite.
In 1801, the first Supreme Council of the Scottish Rite was established in Charleston, South Carolina, becoming the Mother Supreme Council of the World. From there, the Rite rapidly expanded across the United States and internationally. The Scottish Rite is known for its dramatic degree presentations, philosophical teachings, and emphasis on morality, duty, patriotism, and service to humanity. Members progress through degrees numbered from the 4th through the 32nd Degree, with the honorary 33rd Degree being awarded in recognition of outstanding service to the fraternity or society.
Throughout its history, the Scottish Rite has played an important role in Masonic education and charitable work. Today, Scottish Rite Valleys across the country continue to preserve Masonic traditions while supporting charitable causes, leadership development, and fellowship among Master Masons seeking further light in Masonry.
